Can Rawi Hage Land a Giller Prize & Governor General Double?
With less than a week to go before the announcement of the winner of the 2008 Giller Prize, on November 11th, Rawi Hage is favourite at PinnacleSports.com to scoop the first prize with his novel Cockroach, priced 2.000* (bet $1 to return $2). Hage also heads the betting at PinnacleSports.com for the 2008 Governor General’s Award for English fiction priced even shorter at 1.714*. It wouldn’t be the first time one author has claimed both the Giller and G-G as Michael Ondaatje (Anil’s Ghost) completed the double in 2000 as did Richard B Wright (Clara Callan) the following year. The odds movement at PinnacleSports.com suggests Mary Swan (The Boys in the Trees) as the most dangerous rival, with odds shortening to 6.370* second favourite.
Marie Claire Blais Set to Win Record Fourth Governor General’s Award
Marie Claire Blais is favourite to win a record fourth Governor General’s Award for French fiction with Naissance de Rebecca à l’ère des tourments priced 2.700*. The veteran author won her first Governor General’s Award in 1968 (Manuscrits de Pauline Archang), was successful in 1979 (Le Sourd dans la ville), then again in 1996 (Soifs). No other author has won four Governor General’s Award for fiction, either French or English, in its 71 year history. Alice Munro, Hugh MacLennnan and Michael Ondaatje are also stuck on three GG’s (all for English fiction), but none have novels short listed for the 2008 Governor General’s Awards. The winner is announced on November 18th.
