The Brewers trailed the Chicago Cubs by four games in the NL Central going into this week’s play, and they could have been closer; while Chicago had lost seven of its last 10 games through the weekend, Milwaukee had dropped five of seven, and at home no less.

Since winning five in a row a couple of weeks ago, Philadelphia had gone 5-6 after splitting a doubleheader in New York with the Mets on Sunday. So coming into this week, the Phillies trailed the Mets by two games in the NL East, and they were four games back of the Brewers in the NL Wild Card race.
Milwaukee opens this week with a three-game home series vs. the Reds before heading to Philly to begin their final road trip of this season, a 10-gamer with later stops in Chicago and Cincinnati. Meanwhile, the Phils host the Florida Marlins for three games prior to the Brewers coming to town.
Milwaukee has been proving itself a legitimate contender for the National League pennant by winning on the road this year, and they owned a 39-32 mark away from home going into their current road trip. On the other side of this matchup, the Phillies were 39-32 at Citizens Bank Ballpark this year coming into this week.
If recent form holds, the Brewers will send Ben Sheets to the mound to start Thursday’s series opener, lefty Manny Parra on Friday, Dave Bush on Saturday, and Jeff Suppan on Sunday. Philadelphia’s rotation was displaced a bit after Saturday’s game in New York was postponed, forcing the doubleheader Sunday. Joe Blanton was scheduled to go Monday vs. the Marlins, followed by Kyle Kendrick on Tuesday, and Brett Myers on Wednesday. So it’s likely Philly will counter Milwaukee by going with Jamie Moyer on Thursday, Cole Hamels on Friday, Blanton on Saturday, and Kendrick on Sunday.
The Brewers are 17-11 when Sheets starts this year, 14-14 for Parra, 14-11 for Bush, and 16-11 for Suppan. The Phillies are 18-11 when Moyer hits the hill this season, 17-12 for Hamels, 5-4 for Blanton, and 17-11 for Kendrick.
In the only other encounter between these two teams so far this season, the Phils managed to split two games in Milwaukee back in April. The Brewers got five runs in seven innings off Hamels to win the series opener 5-4. Then Moyer and Suppan pitched a 1-1 game to the 8th inning before the Phillies got two runs off the Milwaukee pen to win the second game 3-1.
Coming into this week, the totals were 61-75 (excluding pushes) in Brewers games this season, 62-75 in Phillies games, and 30-37 in games played at Citizens Bank Park, which were averaging a rather ordinary 9.0 total runs per.
