Going into Tuesday’s play the Mets led the Phillies by two games in the NL East, and Philly trailed the Brewers by 5.5 games in the NL Wild Card race.
Brett Myers (8-10, 4.40 ERA, 1.41 WHIP) is slated to start for Philadelphia on Friday night against Mike Pelfrey (13-8, 3.66, 1.35) for New York. Saturday’s FOX game of the week pits Jamie Moyer (12-7, 3.80, 1.37) of the Phils vs. Pedro Martinez (5-3, 5.07, 1.47) of the Mets. And Kyle Kendrick (11-7, 4.83, 1.56) takes his turn in the rotation for Philly against Johan Santana (12-7, 2.70, 1.14) for NY in ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball game.
The Phillies are only 10-15 when Myers starts this year, but a combined 34-22 when Moyer and Kendrick hit the hill. Meanwhile, New York is a combined 34-22 when Pelfrey and Santana start, but only 7-9 when Martinez takes the pill.
Also, the totals have gone a combined 21-30 when Myers and Moyer start this season, but 19-9 when Kendrick goes. And the O/Us are a combined 36-30 when Pelfrey, Martinez, and Santana start this year.
Philly was 12 games over .500 on the season through Monday, and two games over break-even on the road at 36-34. Meanwhile, the Mets were 16 games above .500 through Monday, both overall and at Shea Stadium (41-25).
The Phillies have won six of Myers’ last seven starts, and three of those wins came as underdogs. And they’ll likely be underdogs Friday night when Myers goes up against Pelfrey, for whom the Mets are only 9-8 this year when favored. New York will likely be significantly chalked on Saturday and Sunday.
This is the sixth and final series these two teams will play this regular season, and the Mets have won four of the first five. New York leads the season series vs. Philly 10-5, with the totals going 6-8-1 as the games have averaged 9.5 total runs.
Through Monday, the totals were 61-72 in Phillies games this year, 70-56 in Mets games, and 33-27 in games played at Shea Stadium, which were averaging 8.9 total runs.
