Formula One Betting Preview - Two Races Down; So Far So Good
The 2007 Formula One Championship was one of the most fascinating, contentious and closely fought drivers’ championships for many years. The 59th FIA Formula One season will have to go some way to top the dramatic climax - which saw Kimi Raikkonen eventually snatching the title on the final race of the calendar - but it has certainly started on the right track.
There was carnage off the grid at the opening race of the new season at Melbourne’s Albert Park, when the impact of the traction control rule change was immediately felt. Five cars failed to complete a single lap, and the chaos continued throughout the race, which saw just seven finishers.
The $100million penalty dolled out to McLaren, as punishment for their part in the spy scandal, effectively halted development of a totally new car. However, Lewis Hamilton’s success in the opening race in Melbourne, backs up the suggestion that it isn’t such bad news. The 2007 car was quick on all types of circuit, and offered near-perfect reliability, while Hamilton should be hardened by last season’s experiences.
Ferrari were widely expected to dominate the season with Raikkonen a hard favourite at PinnacleSports.com, fully settled at the Scuderia racing team. Imagine the team’s dismay when the opening race yielded just a single point, their worst start for 16 years. After disaster in Australia, Raikkonen got off the mark with victory in Malaysia, which will encourage the Tifosi, given Ferrari’s tendency to do their best work in the second part of the season. The Italian team’s position in the Constructor’s Championship however, is still being threatened by the very poor start to the season from Felipe Massa. The Brazillian racer span off in the opening two races as a result of driver errors, which puts Massa under severe pressure to deliver going into Bahrain.
BMW made great strides last season establishing themselves as the third team behind McLaren and Ferrari, with Robert Kubica unlucky not to win in China. The Pole produced his best ever finish taking second at Sepang, emulating Nick Heidfeld’s finish in Australia with the promise of more to come from both.
After a poor start to 2007, Renault effectively conceded their constructor’s title, and instead focused on developing a new car for the 2008 season, giving them the potential to become the most improved team. That promise does not seem to have materialised. The return of Fernando Alonso should have added a positive vibe around the team, but just weeks into the new season, and the Spaniard has hinted that he may move onto Ferrari next year.
Red Bull have a huge budget and the genius of designer Adrian Newey, should exert a greater influence as he enters his second year with the team. However, David Coulthard and Mark Webber have earned just two points in the early rounds. Williams surprised many by remaining competitive in 2007, with Nico Rosberg, one of the biggest improvers. The German recorded his first podium finish in Melbourne and has a solid base from which to attack the new campaign, and will target finishing in the points on a regular basis.
