Who’s Looking Good For 2008
The $100million penalty dolled out to McLaren, as punishment for their part in the spy scandal, has effectively halted development of a totally new car, and could seriously impact their competitiveness this season. Rather than introduce a brand new car, they unveiled the MP4-23 on January 7th in Stuttgart which is a re-developed version of last year’s machine. This however, isn’t quite as damaging as it appears, given that the 2007 car was quick on all types of circuit, and offered near-perfect reliability.
Ferrari are well placed to dominate the season with Raikkonen a hard favourite at PinnacleSports.com. The Finn is now fully settled at the Scuderia racing team, and his achievements in the second half of last season – winning two of the last three races - were lost amid the furore surrounding the Alonso-Hamilton scandal. BMW made great strides last season establishing themselves as the third team behind McLaren and Ferrari with Robert Kubica unlucky not to win in China. However, finding the extra pace needed to challenge consistently for wins will be very hard.
Renault have the potential to become the most improved team this year. After a poor start to 2007, they effectively conceded their construction title, and instead focused on developing a car for the 2008 season. The return of Fernando Alonso to the Renault hot-seat adds to that positive vibe around the team. Red Bull have a huge budget, and the genius of designer Adrian Newey, who’s influence should be greater, entering his second year with the team. David Coulthard and Mark Webber could pick up where they left off and score points in the early rounds.
Williams surprised many by remaining competitive in 2007, with Nico Rosberg, one of the biggest improvers. They have a solid base from which to attack in the new campaign, where they should target regularly finishing in the points. After a dire 2007, Honda could suffer as others improve. While signing Ross Brawn (mastermind of Schumacher’s seven titles) is a very positive move, their driving roster of Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello is unspectacular.
Toyota have little obvious cause for optimism this year, while Torro Rosso - starting the season with last year’s car – are also likely to struggle. Force India are the latest incarnation of the Jordan, Midland, Spyker family tree. Though they will be bringing a huge new audience to F1, they look destined to be the whipping boys of the field in 2008.
Traction Ban Should Increase Driver Demands
The most significant rule change for the upcoming F1 season is the banning of traction controls by the FIA, which have long been accused as diminishing driver skill. Traction Control is used as a performance enhancement, allowing maximum traction under acceleration without wheel spin. Traction controls were banned up to 2001, but due to a difficulty in policing the regulation, they were re-admitted.
The introduction of standard ECU’s should levels the playing field in that respect and should place a greater premium on driver ability, which also produce greater in-race incidents. The biggest impact will be seen off the grid where drivers will need to rely on their own judgement, rather than flooring the accelerator and letting technology do the rest. Those drivers that master this technique quickest will make places off the start-line.
