Black Cats Hoping for Better Luck Back in Premiership
In his first ever managerial post, Roy Keane, has proved just as inspirational in the dressing room as he was on the pitch, taking Sunderland back to the Premiership as Championship winners. To achieve immortality at the Stadium of Light however, Keane must now develop a team that can not only reach the Premiership, but stay there. PinnacleSports.com might rate eight other teams as bigger outsiders than Sunderland in their Premiership betting market, but at 251.00, the Black Cats are still a very long shot.
Sunderland were relegated from the Premiership in 2005/06 breaking their own record for the lowest points tally of 15, recording just three wins. The Irishman will be only too aware of that legacy, but never one to shirk a scrap, will be relishing the challenge. Keano has been active in the transfer market, trying to find the quality the Mackems lacked in their previous failed attempts to survive in the top flight, though handicapped by the fact that the best available players will not see Sunderland as a preferred destination.
With this in mind, and without an enormous transfer budget, Keane has sought to bring in young players with a point to prove, in whom he sees potential that he can develop. New signings, Michael Chopra, Greg Halford and Kieran Richardson fall into this category.
Chopra was unable to establish himself at Newcastle where his only Premiership goals came against Sunderland. Last season he caught Keane’s eye playing for Cardiff, again finding the net against Sunderland. As a Geordie by birth, Chopra would naturally receive a luke-warm reception at the Stadium of Light, but he will have to work even harder to win round the Sunderland fans to erase the memories of those goals against his new employers as well as justifying a £5million price tag.
Richardson moves on from Man Utd where he was unlikely to command a regular first team place given the depth of available talent. An England international, his talent is unquestioned, but his temperament is more of a concern. Keane will no doubt do his best to keep him in line. Halford joins from Reading, where the 22 year old struggled to break into the first team. The 6ft 4” full back developed a strong reputation at Colchester and certainly has the physical attributes to perform in the Premiership.
Sunderland kick-off their campaign at home to Spurs and it is in front of their own fans that the battle for survival will be won. Keane will be eager to get an early victory on the board to banish memories of the Mackems last Premiership adventure when they recorded just one victory at the Stadium of Light, in their last home fixture, after 18 attempts, long after they had already been relegated.
