Formula One Betting Analysis - Monaco Grand Prix

Formula One Betting Odds - Monaco Qualification & Race May 19-20

Formula One Betting Analysis from PinnacleSports.com

In May, the F1 circuit heads to Europe, for two of the most contrasting races in the GP calendar – Barcelona and Monaco. The Catalonian capital is one of the most culturally rich locations in Europe; unfortunately the Grand Prix it hosts often fails to live up to the vibrancy of the city. At least F1 fans need only wait a fortnight for what by comparison is the most exciting and unpredictable race in motor sport, let alone Formula One. The world famous street-based Monaco Grand Prix rarely fails to provide shock results and race drama. www.PinnacleSports.com, the Internet’s leading online sportsbook will be offering unbeatable prices for the Monaco Grand Prix.

Monaco – Jewel in the F1 Crown

Monaco, the second smallest country in the world, is paradoxically home to one of the most iconic sporting events, the Monaco Grand Prix. Included in the First F1 World Championship in 1950, this jewel in the crown of the F1 season has seen a Grand Prix run through the tiny principality’s walled streets since 1929.

The race has been run over the same circuit since 1955, but despite changing so little, the circuit remains the ultimate test of driving skill. Though its tight bends, steep uphill climbs and fast downhill runs makes it the slowest track in GP, it is also the most exciting, with 10 seconds of every lap spent in the darkness of a tunnel. Two cars have actually ended up in the famous harbour, a focal point for the majority of the 150,000 spectators. If it were not an existing GP race, it would never be admitted on safety grounds. Nelson Piquet drew the famous analogy of ‘trying to cycle around your living room’ but in the same breath declared that, “a win here was worth two anywhere else”.

The anachronistic race holds a special place in the hearts and minds of the whole F1 community from drivers to fans, as well as for long shot players everywhere. In 2004, Jarno Trulli scored his first and only win to date. However in 1996, Olivier Panis at the wheel of a Ligier scored his only F1 win for a whopping return of 300-1. Surely the biggest upset in the sport’s modern history.

Given the narrow nature of the course, overtaking is nigh on impossible and success depends on grid position, car reliability and luck. It has often been said that qualifying was more important than the race, but the rule changes surrounding qualification have added tension. With any number of cars out on the track for the first 15 minute session there is real potential for mishap. The mayhem qualification in Monaco can cause was highlighted last year when Michael Schumacher was ruled to have deliberately stopped on the track to prevent rivals setting a faster time in the final session. He was banished to the back of the grid, effectively ending his chances in the race proper.

As the slowest track on the calendar, the emphasis is on engine torque rather than outright power and on mechanical grip rather than aerodynamic grip. All the aerodynamic elements of F1 cars, of which there are many, only really come into play above around 80mph. However, most of the tight corners have to be taken below this speed at the Monaco GP. Grip is therefore generated by suspension and dampers, with success dependant upon a well-balanced car.

Given the unique nature of the track, course specialists have unsurprisingly emerged throughout the race’s history. Michael Schumacher won there five times, while the late Ayrton Senna holds the record with six wins. Of the current crop, David Coulthard is regarded as the Monaco master. Since the 2000 season the Scot has a record of two wins and a third place (in 2006), Red Bull’s first ever podium finish.
