Formula One Betting Odds For Qualification & Race April 14-15
Following the heat of Malaysia’s Sepang Circuit, the F1 circus moves onto the Middle East for the Grand Prix of Bahrain, where drivers and teams will again encounter some of the most challenging physical conditions on the F1 Circuit, while www.PinnacleSports.com will still be offering their unbeatable F1 betting service.
Yalla Bahrain
The Bahrain Grand Prix gets under way on April 15th, but two months of celebrations under the banner of ‘Yalla Bahrain’ (Let’s go Bahrain) have already provided an almighty build up. The campaign served as a message to Bernie Ecclestone that the race should remain in the calendar despite the persistent rumours that Abu Dhabi’s admission for 2009, could be at Bahrain’s expense.
Though it was important that there were no injuries from an international soccer competition between drivers and teams, the most important element of the festivities for F1 punters was the testing that took place at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) on February 22-24 and February 27th-March 1st. The data from these sessions will provide useful hints as to those teams tuned up for the track.
Bahrain has only hosted F1 racing since 2004, when Ferrari recorded a 1-2. Since then, Renault has dominated with Fernando Alonso winning back-to-back races. The Spaniard has of course moved on to McLaren, Who recorded a 1-2 in Malaysia, with the Spaniard taking the flag, and making him a hot favourite for this race.
Burning Rubber
Historically teams using Bridgestone Tyres have enjoyed a distinct advantage in the hot conditions of Bahrain. However, with Bridgestone the sole tyre supplier this season, the playing field is level from that perspective. The company will be taking a ‘hard’ and ’soft’ compound tyre to each race this year, with the rule that each driver must use both types during the race.
Though drivers will be relieved to leave Malaysia’s humidity behind, the dry heat of Bahrain’s desert landscape, in which the Sakhir circuit sits, presents its own challenges. Aside from the 40 degree heat, drifting sand poses two major problems. Firstly tailing cars can expect to be sandblasted by those in front, so despite compromising absolute aerodynamic efficiency, heavy duty air filters are essential. Secondly, the inevitable drift of sand onto the track creates an unreliable braking surface. All of this conspires to make a good, stable set-up an important confidence variable for the driver.
The New Breed of Track
Searing heat is not the only thing that the relatively new circuits of Malaysia and Bahrain have in common. Both were designed by F1’s in-house German architect, Herman Tilke, renowned for designing exciting tracks which promote passing. Futuristic double-sided grandstands please the spectators whilst at all times, safety is upper-most. Tike’s designs feature an eclectic mix of sweeping bends with high-speed changes of direction, hairpins with a couple of decent straights and good overtaking opportunities at both tracks.
With a large portion of each lap spent in full throttle, Bahrain is one of the more testing tracks for engine reliability that the teams will experience all year.
